Kia Ora,
Lots to read in this week's newsletter, so I'll keep my words short.
Two weeks down and more than half of the tickets for the ball have been sold. Gather your friends, get your tickets, and get ready for a great night out! Don’t worry if you want to come alone; we’re such a great and welcoming community that we’ll be sure to set you up with a fun group of people. We’re all about connecting here at the Chamber!
Speaking of connection, we’re joining forces with the Irish and Canadian Chambers at our next networking drinks at Chamber favorite, The Exchange. Register now to save your spot and for your chance to win some great lucky door prizes!
We’d also like to congratulate Chamber member Andy Sceats, winner of our monthly member draw. Thanks to Winestone at Mercure on Stevens, he will enjoy a fabulous taste of home as they serve up some great Kiwi food at their Aus and Kiwi-themed restaurant.
Regards, Tahsha Pratt

| Our recent business trip to Singapore was a venture filled with endless opportunities for our real estate agency from New Zealand. The primary purpose of our trip was to seek buyers interested in purchasing property in New Zealand and to establish long-term relationships with referral partners such as accountants and immigration law service providers. We were particularly excited to join up with our law firm, Stace Hammond, for this trip, as their expertise and connections played a crucial role in making this journey possible. |

New Zealand Tax Update - By Des Trigg |
| |
The Minister of Finance, Hon Nicola Willis, delivered her first budget on Thursday, 31 May 2024. Since the election of the Coalition Government (November 2023), the Minister has consistently defended the position that the “tax cuts” announced pre-election by the Coalition would not involve additional borrowing. The cuts are contained within a change to personal income thresholds as opposed to a reduction in tax rates. This is the first change to thresholds since 2010. Attached to this report are separate schedules: - Tax thresholds/rates effective until 30 July 2024 [A]
- Tax thresholds/rates effective from 31 July 2024 [B]
For returning expats/arriving migrants, where NZ residential rental property has been or will be purchased, the Coalition has returned the deductibility of borrowing interest and extended the ownership period of such property before taxing any gain. From 01 April 2024, 80% of interest incurred will be tax deductible against rental income. This will be increased to 100% from 01 April 2025. This restores entitlement for landlords to claim interest in the same way any business taxpayer is entitled, where money borrowed relates to the earning of taxable income. Under Labour, where such property was sold within 2 years of ownership, any gain was taxable. That 2-year period has been extended by the Coalition to 10 years.
