Kia Ora,
Didn’t our Kiwi Olympians do well!?! It has been so exciting watching them from afar with lots of shouting at the TV and jumping up and down. Who knew I loved track cycling and slalom kayaking so much! A massive congratulations to our whole team, you’ve done us all proud.
We had a busy board meeting this week over a glass of New Zealand wine putting the finishing touches on the upcoming SOLD OUT Invinciball. It’s going to be an excellent night enjoying our great Kiwi hospitality, dancing, connecting and then egging the ABs on against South Africa. I’m looking forward to seeing those of you who managed to snag a ticket there.
Thursday 29th August is also our New Members Breakfast, free to those joining the chamber it is a great way to meet other new members and some of the board. Please register as we’d love to meet you.
On a more formal note, I wanted to draw your attention to the upcoming Annual General meeting, which will take place on Thursday, 19th September at the High Commissioner’s Residence. This complimentary event is for members only and includes light refreshments and canapes. Event registration and board nomination forms, for those of you keen on joining the board, can be found here. I encourage you to attend to hear the highlights of the past year, our plans for the year ahead, and to vote on our board for the 2024 / 25 year. As always, it is also a great opportunity to connect with fellow Kiwis and our extended whānau.
If you’re interested in putting your name forward or are just keen to chat please feel free to reach out to me on LinkedIn or via the Chamber, and thank you all for your continued support and membership in the NZCC.
I look forward to connecting with you soon.
Ngā mihi

6 year old kiwi, AJ bikes 128km around Singapore raising funds for kids in Cambodia |
| |
|
|
During a family holiday to Cambodia, 6 year old kiwi, AJ visited the Angkor Kids Centre (AKC). A non-profit organization dedicated to providing English language and computer literacy education to rural communities. English is not taught in public school and AJ learned that many of these young kids walk up to 5km after a full day of school, just for the chance to learn. It is their key to getting future employment outside of poverty.
Spending time with the kids she helped them as they proudly swept out their modest barn style space before class.
A little kiwi kid saw firsthand the impact donations from her school, AIS had on this community. Books she had donated through AIS displayed in a much loved modest space.
Witnessing the difference something small like books made, she was inspired to do more. She wanted to help fix their roof and solar that no longer worked because the batteries were too old. Or maybe they could get an extra teacher so the older kids, letting the younger ones go first, didn't have to finish class at 9PM.
Having just got a new bike AJ’s idea was to, “bike the whole country!” After a quick reality check from mum, then a check to ensure she could stay off main roads, the goal was set to finish the 128KM loop of Singapore in under 10 days. She would have to go to school during the day and then give up all her after-school activities, play time and friends to bike instead. A fundraising target of $5K was set.
Day one after a delayed hiccup start, she set off from Rowers Bay and 21.52KM later finished at Pasir Ris Park. This would be her first of many late nights to bed.
Day two with an already sore bottom she was off again. This time encountering wild dogs, resulting in a decent crash and a bruised-up shin. A quick look between parents and the question was asked if she wanted to finish there for the day. "But, have we reached the target? Then no, I'm still going!" Just to test her some more, the heavens opened 10 minutes later, and she finished leg two at Changi soaking wet.
Over the next few days with the added investment in a gel seat cover, the added addition of some supportive friends and community, she kept biking.
Over 8 days she had a sore bum, wild dogs, more wild animals, two crashes, 3 days of pouring rain (including her last day), one race to beat a thunderstorm, high winds, high temperatures, mum making directional errors resulting in extra distance, "gee thanks Mum", one head bike from an ant inside her helmet, and some tricky to navigate sections …. She did it!
Her wee legs officially recorded 130.2KM and raised over $5,600! Completing this in 8 days meant the joy of finishing on Singapore National Day. Still with a sore bum, bruises and an itchy head, but so grateful to everyone who supported her mission, and hopeful the kids will get what they need. A huge thank you to everyone who supported her, donated or even just provided good advice. It was all so appreciated. |

Can you share your journey into winemaking and what inspired you to start Eva Pemper Wines?
I am a Croatian living in NZ. I came to New Zealand in 2012 following my dream to travel, meet people and make wine around the world. I absolutely fell in love with New Zealand and New Zealand wines, people and places.
I come from a winemaking family, so I didn’t have to go far for my inspiration to be a part of something as wonderful as the world of wine.
My parents are my inspiration. They are very talented and passionate winemakers. Their love for crafting wine immersed me, on a daily basis, in something that sparked a passion in me and led me to the path I am on now.
I hold a master’s degree in winemaking from Agriculture University in Zagreb, Croatia and a Graduate Diploma in Oenology from EIT, Hawke’s Bay. This has given me a deep understanding of winemaking practices from very different parts of the world that I draw on in my winemaking.
My parents started making wine in a garage with nothing but a strong belief and deep faith that this is what they should be doing. It was hard during the period of war in Croatia, but my family didn’t give up. As a family we are all proud of what we achieved in those extremely difficult times, making wine in a war zone is no easy thing! I treasure my family’s inspiration to work for something so interesting, challenging and amazing as making wine.
Due to a few sad things that happened there was no business for me to continue when I finished my study so now, here I am on the other side of the world, committed to continuing my family’s legacy and sharing our story.
I started Eva Pemper Wines with my business partner who owns a vineyard in Marlborough. This means that we have our own vineyards and a secure supply of high-quality grapes which is such an essential resource that ensures our ability to produce exceptional wine year after year.
The “Eva Pemper” brand is a product of many wonderful things that came together and became one.
Continuing my family’s legacy and sharing our story on the other side of the world is the core of my wines. I feel incredibly special to be able to do that from New Zealand.
How would you describe your winemaking philosophy and the unique techniques you use? As a winemaker my vision is to allow the grapes and the vineyards to speak for themselves through the wine and to intervene as little as possible while crafting a delicious drop that represents a certain place in time. My winemaking style is quite simple, I try to make approachable wines that are easy to drink and can be enjoyed on any occasion, while at the same time they are delicious, fresh, and elegant.
What are the signature wines of Eva Pemper Wines, and what makes them special? Sauvignon Blanc – New Zealand grows such unique, high quality and delicious Sauvignon Blanc. It is the most famous wine that comes from New Zealand and it is recognized globally as an incredible expression of this very special grape variety. I am so grateful to be here in New Zealand and to be able to make this wine and showcase to the world how absolutely fantastic it is. For me Sauvignon Blanc is “New Zealand in the glass” – it is fresh, pure and vibrant and full of unique and delicious flavours. As a winemaker it is my staple wine and the core of Eva Pemper wine brand and it is so important for me when I highlight this wine that everyone who has a glass knows it can only come from one and only place in the world – Marlborough, New Zealand. For me personally as a winemaker, Sauvignon Blanc holds a special place in my heart, it was the first ever wine I have released under Eva Pemper wine brand in December 2019.
Pinot Noir - this is definitely a winemaker’s variety - so difficult to make and super demanding from the vineyard to the winery but when successful, it is absolutely an incredible wine that has everything you need to enjoy a glass of wine and be immersed into all that it gives, aromas, flavours, terroir, winemakers touch, etc. It is a winemaker’s challenge and such immense pride and recognition when it becomes highly rated and awarded.
How did the collaboration with Little Farms come about, and what has been the most rewarding aspect of this partnership? The connection with Little Farms was created through a wonderful event organised by New Zealand Trade and Enterprise in May 2023 in Singapore at the NZ High Commission where the producers, including myself were able to share their wines with the guests.
The most rewarding aspect has been the opportunity to get Eva Pemper wine brand into Singapore and being represented by a business like Little Farms that has the same values, which is very important. |
