Kia Ora,
Mānawatia a Matariki
Māori believe that appearance of Matariki in the morning sky in mid-winter marks the Māori New Year, or Te Mātahi o te Tau. It signals a time to remember those who have passed, celebrate the present and plan for the future. It’s a time to spend with whānau and friends – to enjoy kai (food), waiata (song), tākaro (games) and haka.
Because Māori follow the Māori lunar calendar, the dates for Matariki change every year. In 2024, we celebrate Matariki from 29 June to 6 July, with a national public holiday recognised tomorrow, on 28 June*.
We hope you take the chance this weekend to connect with whānau and friends, and reflect on wonderful memories spent with those dear to you.
Speaking of connecting, we are joining the Irish, Canadian, and South African Chambers for networking drinks in two weeks! it's set to be a great night filled with fab food, including mini burgers and fish n'chips, drinks and banter, so be sure to secure your spot here.
Regards, Tahsha Pratt

Book Launch: "Perspectives of Two Island Nations: Singapore and New Zealand" |
| |
Last week, we had the pleasure of attending the launch of the book "Perspectives of Two Island Nations: Singapore and New Zealand" with the esteemed presence of Singapore's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan. The event was graced by many distinguished guests, including New Zealand High Commissioner to Singapore, Ms. Gabrielle Rush, and the book's driving force, Dr. Anne-Marie Schleich.
In his address, Dr. Balakrishnan highlighted the unique and strategic relationship between our two nations. He reflected on the historical ties, from the days when New Zealand troops were stationed in Singapore, to our contemporary collaborations in trade, defense, and sustainability. He remarked on the critical role New Zealand played during Singapore’s formative years and how our partnership has evolved to address modern challenges such as climate change and digital economy initiatives.
The launch of "Perspectives of Two Island Nations" is a testament to the enduring friendship and collaboration between Singapore and New Zealand. This book, featuring contributions from 27 eminent figures, encapsulates the strategic vision and agency of small states like ours. We are particularly proud that our Chamber member, Ken Hickson, authored a chapter in this significant work. It serves as a reminder of our shared history, mutual support, and the strategic options that we, as small nations, possess.
We congratulate Dr. Anne-Marie Schleich and all contributors on this significant achievement and encourage our members to read this pertinent and insightful book.
