|Newsletter 19 January 2023
Welcome to 2023!
I hope you managed some down time, family adventures, fabulous food, caught up on some much needed rest, and prepared yourself for a great year ahead!
We're looking forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming events. Aside from Waitangi Day and International Woman's Day, we have several other events in the works, so stay tuned for more details.
Member of the Month will return in February, and will commence by introducing our new High Commissioner - designate, Gabrielle Rush.
We will also be promoting our wonderful Sponsors and Corporate Members, and bringing you, our members, some great offers where we can.
The Chamber also turns 40 this year, so save some room for cake!
We are sharing on our socials, an array of fabulous photos (see above pink cream buns, supplied by Chamber Board Secretary Liz McAuliffe), shared by members who were fortunate enough to return home over the the summer. If you have some you are happy to share, feel free to forward them onto me, by replying to this newsletter, and I'll include them where I can.
Take care, and enjoy your Lunar New Year Celebrations,
|New Zealand Wins First-Ever Singapore Sail Grand Prix
The Kiwis smashed the first Sail GP in Singapore, last weekend, after a tough start. They started the competition 4 penalty points down after a bump with the US team in practice, but came out on top with an excellent performance on day two.
Singapore’s unpredictable weather resulted in light winds on Saturday, with only two races sailing.
Fortunately, the winds picked up on day two, resulting in some thrilling racing. Great performances also came from the Swiss, Danes, and our neighbors, with the Aussies securing 3rd place in the Singapore leg of the performance. We’re proud of the team, and it was great to see big NZ sailing celebrities here in Singapore.
Next stop is Sydney, followed by Christchurch. If you missed the action this year, don’t worry; they’ll be back next year for what we hope will be a repeat performance!
Race wrap up provided by Chamber board president Kellie Twigge and Board Member Paul Town.
|Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announces resignation
Jacinda Ardern has announced she will step down as Prime Minister and Leader of the Labour Party. Her resignation will take effect on the appointment of a new Prime Minister.
A caucus vote to elect a new Party Leader will occur in 3 days’ time on Sunday the 22nd of January.
“Being Prime Minister has been the greatest honour of my life and I want to thank New Zealanders for the enormous privilege of leading the country for the last five and a half years,” Jacinda Ardern said.
General Election to be held on 14 October 2023
The 2023 New Zealand general Election will be held on Saturday 14 October 2023, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced today.
“Announcing the election date early in the year provides New Zealanders with certainty and has become the practice of this Government and the previous one, and I believe is best practice,” Jacinda Ardern said.
“Most recent elections have been held in the latter months of the year, so this year’s timing keeps with that tradition and is similar to the 2020 election date.
